Global Coastal Cities Summit 2023

Resilience First has partnered with our member Mumbai First for the Global Coastal Cities Summit (GCCS), where we are delighted to host a session on enhancing the resilience of ports and coastal communities.

The GCCS aims to address the pressing issues of future-proofing coastal cities, sustainable methods of controlling and combating flooding, as well as the cross-financing of efforts for both adaptation and mitigation. The summit will form part of India’s official G20 programme.

Our joint session, from 13.30 to 14.45 IST, titled Strategies for Protecting City Infrastructure, is delivered in partnership with Resilience Rising, Arup, Lloyds Register Foundation, Lloyds Register Group and UNFCCC’s High-Level Climate Champions.

We will discuss how critical infrastructure is in coastal cities and how major ports can be safeguarded from the disastrous impacts of climate change. The session will also delve into building capability and resilience within existing infrastructure, taking inspiration from the successful practices implemented by our partners locally and globally.

The event will include a panel discussion followed by a Q&A exploring the following topics:

  • Adaptation planning and its integration into policy and practical decision-making processes
  • How can we safeguard the city’s infrastructure from the rising sea-level & varied climate change impact?
  • Functional, Infrastructural and supply-chain vulnerabilities arising from the impact of climate change
  • Understanding the unique challenges of ports and coastal communities reliant on them – their vulnerability to climate change, sea level rise, extreme weather events, and natural disasters
  • Developing collaborative approaches that consider the socio-economic and cultural dynamic of coastal cities
