The Future of Aviation

With the aviation industry in the doldrums because of the coronavirus pandemic, the issue is one of survival over thriving – the two elements of resilience in normal times. There appears little chance of any return to new normality until the worst of the virus has abated. Then, it will be a slow climb and return to some sort of profitability. As the end game is some way off, it is appropriate to consider how the commercial airline and airports industry can prepare itself for the long haul and what will be the features that emerge as key determinants of recovery. Will major consolidation within the industry be the watch word? Will passengers return in the same numbers? Will airport expansion be put on hold for years? Will the industry look at resilience in a new light?

Paul Everitt is the Chief Executive of ADS, the UK trade organisation representing around 1,000 companies across the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors. Paul has more than 20 years’ experience of public policy and media campaigns in the manufacturing and transport sectors. He is a member of both the Defence and Aerospace Growth Partnerships and is well known across Westminster, Whitehall and Brussels as a champion of UK manufacturing and respected advocate of industry issues and concerns. Paul joined ADS in February 2013 and was previously Chief Executive of SMMT, the trade association for the UK motor industry.

David Huttner leads PA Consulting commercial aviation practice, and was the Head of Commercial for Virgin Blue Australia where he managed the growth strategy domestically and throughout the South Pacific. His global aviation career spans more than 25 years and covers all areas of the industry from sales and distribution through to product delivery and airline restructuring. David has helped managed or offered advice and guidance through number of key industry crises since September 2001 on behalf of airlines, governments, airports and industry partners.
