The first-ever Red Extreme Heat warning was issued in the UK last Friday (15th July) by the Met Office as temperatures were expected to reach 40C in London on Monday and Tuesday. Such temperatures make it extremely challenging for cities and society to cope.
So, fittingly (albeit uncomfortably), on one of the hottest days on record in the UK, Resilience First and our Champion business members are joining the UN’s international panel of scientific authors and worldwide urban policymakers to discuss what the IPCC findings mean across the globe and to identify the challenges and opportunities.
We have all seen evidence of how climate change has disrupted nature, our cities and our operations. With international cooperation and the latest scientific data, we can make well-informed decisions and take an inclusive approach involving government, the private sector and local communities. Resilience is about being able to cope with shocks and stresses, including those from a changing climate, and to maintain the growth of our cities and the people and businesses within.
The convention, in partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM), the German Government, the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) and Resilience Rising, and kindly hosted by ICAEW, aims to inform the Summary for Urban Policymakers (SUP) series. This four-volume series, to be released at COP27 in November 2022, will contain up-to-date science written in the most user-friendly way to support immediate and informed action at the local level.
We look forward to sharing the learnings so that you can gain the insight and access to real data that will enable you to make informed decisions about climate change. Find more here.
