The SARS-CoV-2 virus, leading to the COVID-19 pandemic, is not the first and won’t be the last disease to jump from the animals to humans. It is now well understood that pathogens spread across boundaries with often tragic and devastating results and are jumping at an increasing rate. Climate change will accelerate the jump as traditional natural habitats are destroyed. We can, and must, learn all we can from past outbreaks while preparing for future ones. Science has brought new vaccines to the fore in the fight against viruses but we still lag behind in fielding new antibiotics to counter bacteria and microbes that are developing resistance. Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) is rife worldwide and should be another high priority for scientists.
Professor Dame Sally Davies, the former Chief Medical Officer for England, advocates globally on AMR and is the convenor of The Trinity Challenge, a coalition of partners united by the common aim of developing insights and actions to contribute to a world better protected from global health emergencies.
Professor Davies will provide Resilience First members with an insight on the nature of future pandemic risks and how we should approach the challenge of improving global health with greater determination, collaboration, enhanced resilience and better science.
